Are you ready for all the new employees you will soon hire?

I imagine we all are looking forward to the end of this recession and grow the top line again.

The National Association for BusinessEconomics (NABE) reported yesterday that hiring and capital spending will increase over the next six months.

NABE reported in its Industry Survey that demand in Q3 2009 increased for the first time in five quarters, while the number of companies adding jobs doubled from July 2009 to October 2009.

The questions are: Are you ready for this?
Do you have the tools to support the training of your new hires?

Corporations are recognizing the need to retain new employees and enable them to more quickly achieve productivity in their new capacity and environment.

This has resulted in the adoption of formalized“onboarding” programs. In a research piece by the Aberdeen Group, results determined that the best-in-class onboarding enterprises realize a:

· 100% improved retention rates of new hires
· 60% reduced time-to-productivity for new hires
Moreover, best-in-class onboarding companies are 35% more likely to have a formal onboarding training program and twice as likely to clearly define the performance metrics assigned to their onboarding efforts. The Aberdeen Group further identifies that socialization is primary part of the onboarding efforts and that onboarding starts before a new hires first day on the job.

Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX®. Our eLearning 2.0education distribution technologies are paving the way in creating innovative solutions to meet the needs of today’s learner.

Why are Web 2.0 technologies still bleeding edge in corporate training functions?

A recent report of 700 learning professionals conducted by the American Society for Training & Development entitled Transforming Learning with Web 2.0 Technologies found that Web 2.0 technologies is still “bleeding edge” when used within corporate training functions. Only 9% of companies use Web 2.0 technologies in a major way within their learning function.

My last blog - Collaboratories: How can you compete with the most innovative companies in the world? – discussed how the most innovative companies in the world embraced the collaborative learning that is facilitated by the Web 2.0 in their R&D and business processes. However, it appears most are slow to adopt.

Fortunately, the report the future appears brighter than the present. In the same report:

87% of respondents predict in the next three years their companies are more likely to use Web 2.0 technologies than they currently do
77% believe Web 2.0 technologies will improve knowledge sharing to a large or very large extent
95% percent of respondents think that Web 2.0 technology is effective, though the highest marks for it are not very high, indicating that many do not know how to use the technologies and the associated fear of them
But why aren’t the 91% of companies that are not using Web 2.0 technologies in a more prominent manner in the corporate training function, especially when increasing employee productivity must be a key strategic goal for all organizations in this macro economic environment? Moreover, if you look at any recent survey of younger workers in the corporate environment, they all yearn for collaborative, informal learning. They understand and embrace the power of Web 2.0, having used it more than some of us older folks.

Could it be the decision makers tend to be a little older, less Facebook friendly, more passive in decision making in this environment, and thus, clutch to more conventional techniques. We all know what happens with sheep – “sheep get slaughtered1.” I wonder if the initial adoption of emailing had the same type of result.

In this same report, it appears the respondents know in their hearts using Web 2.0 technologies is coming, with nearly seven out of eight respondents saying they will use Web 2.0 more in the near future. It took time for teachers to embrace personal computers in the classroom. They are now resisting smartphones as a powerful learning tool.

Your shareholders should not wait. Your CEO should not wait. The tools are here. They are affordable and easy to implement.

Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX®. Our eLearning 2.0 education distribution technologies are paving the way in creating innovative solutions to meet the needs of today’s learner.

Collaboratories: How can you compete with the most innovative companies in the world?

In this week's Business Week magazine, its main article entitled Big Blue's Global Lab discusses how companies such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Proctor & Gamble and Eli Lilly are collaborating all over the world with their geographically disbursed offices, universities, governments and even other companies in their R&D efforts. IBM actually calls theirs "collaboratories" - with the potential to set up over 100 worldwide over the coming years. "The world is our lab now," states John E. Kelly III, director of IBM Research.

For organizations of all sizes to stay competitive and innovative in today's global marketplace, employees must have tools and reinforcement to learn and conduct their business in a collaborative way. The good news is that millions - including most of your employee - are familiar with communicating right now and do so on their own time. Social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter have made this type of collaborative communication second nature.

But that is not enough. The attributes of social networking, when combined with the fundamentals and functionality of traditional learning management systems is critical for enterprises of all sizes to adopt and implement as part of their corporate training plans.

By having an eLearning tool that reinforces collaborative behavior when an employees first starts with a firm (onboarding), is reinforced in ongoing eLearning initiatives and becomes part of the corporate fabric allows for collaboratories to work in today's global competitive environment.

Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX®. Our eLearning 2.0 education distribution technologies are paving the way in creating innovative solutions to meet the needs of today's learner.

Online Education Beats the Classroom

On Wednesday, Aug. 19, the New York Times published an article based on a 12 year study comprehensive study on online education at all levels (K-12, college and adult continuing education programs of all kinds) was recently published. The study encompassed 99 quantitative studies comparing online and instructor lead courses.

Conclusion - online education beats the classroom.

In the article, reporter Steve Lohr states:

"Until fairly recently, online education amounted to little more than electronic versions of the old-line correspondence courses. That has really changed with arrival of Web-based video, instant messaging and collaboration tools.

The real promise of online education, experts say, is providing learning experiences that are more tailored to individual students than is possible in classrooms. That enables more "learning by doing," which many students find more engaging and useful."

The real promise of eLearning is available today.

Moreover, the dean of Arizona State University's Online and Extended Campus program states we are at an inflection point with respect to eLearning. Lohr reports that Mr. Regier see things evolving fairly rapidly, accelerated by the increasing use of social networking technology.

You will want an eLearning platform that will assist you in getting these results - and not use legacy systems that, as described above, are little more than electronic versions of courses. If you are an academic institution, see what institutions like the University of Cambridge has selected.

If you are a corporation, your employees need to be more productive more than ever before. And when your CFO is challenging your training budget, suggest an eLearning 2.0 platform with little investment, a very rapid ROI and all the benefits of a state of the art eLearning system. If you are looking to toss out your legacy LMS like a 1/3rd of large companies are intending to do, get your payback before the end of the year.

Cash for LMS clunkers - Why are corporations dumping their legacy learning management systems and where are they going…

In the current edition of Chief Learning Officer magazine, Josh Bersin, the well respected founder of Bersin & Associates indicates that of those large corporations that have learning management systems (LMSs), almost one in three will be dumping their legacy LMS like a 1971 Chevy Vega, without any incentives from the U.S. government. Why is this happening?

The employee – the learner – is demanding it

What are employees saying?

Corporate employees surveyed by one of our content partners, SkillSoft plc, entitled The Future of Learning Corporate Training, state corporate training that is provided is substandard, and 54% of corporate employees
experience little to no value in the training received from their employer. The top preferences of corporate learners in this survey are:

  • Being able to get information where and when needed
  • Being in charge of the pace of learning
  • Learning in bite-sized portions
  • Learning at their desktop

According to Mr. Bersin, organizations are looking for LMSs that support:

  • Collaboration
  • Informal learning
  • Knowledge sharing

And this recession will be ending – hopefully sooner rather than later. Today, "only" 247,000 workers lost their jobs in July – lowest number in nearly a year. Soon, hopefully really soon, we need be in position to support hiring new staff. Corporations recognize the need to retain new employees and enable them to more quickly achieve productivity in their new capacity and environment. "Onboarding" programs and platforms to support this make a difference.

In a January 2008 research benchmark by the Aberdeen Group, results determined that the best-in-class onboarding enterprises realize a:

  • 100% improved retention rates of new hires
  • 60% reduced time-to-productivity for new hires

The Aberdeen Group further identifies that socialization is primary part of the onboarding efforts and that onboarding starts before a new hires first day on the job.

So CLOs are listening and dumping their clunkers - the legacy LMSs – and looking at more efficient, technology packed eLearning 2.0 LMSs

And the good news for CLOs is that there are new LMS platforms that provide the collaboration, informal learning and knowledge sharing capabilities through the use of feature-rich social networking tools via Web 2.0 technology, that can assist new employees get to productivity fast than ever before. The "more fuel efficient" LMSs can be a fully hosted, Software as a Service (SaaS) solution that is both reasonably priced and easily integrated to advance an organization's educational offerings.

Truly a Win – Win - Win situation…

A win for the organization: getting an affordable, hosted LMS platform. A win for the CLO: a more robust, engaging eLearning platform that employees will use. And most importantly, a win for the learner: who becomes more productive, useful and valuable to the organization. Maybe the LMS junkyard might get a win from this as well…

Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX®. The Cost of eLearning 2.0

In a recent article by Howard Schechter, eLearning consultant for eLearn Magazine, Mr. Schechter details the cost of implementing the traditional learning management systems. Here is what he says:

"A typical first-year budget may be in the $100,000 -$200,000 range for a Fortune 1000 company, while a small business or divisional learning initiative may spend $30,000 –$50,000. Smaller learning initiatives cost less because there are fewer concerns, such as tying it in with CRM software.

Enterprise level implementations require a lot more design and upfront work (money), as there are more players, issues, and integration. The bigger the project, the more it's going to cost.

This discussion focuses on the concerns of this mid-market, which covers learning systems engaging between 1,000 and 5,000 learners.

Mid-Market Costs
The costs of mid-market programs vary significantly, and there are several different costs within, including:

  • initial cost of the LMS, LCMS, and authoring software,
  • annual software maintenance (typically 15 percent to 20 percent of the purchase price),
  • software licenses required to run the applications such as SQL Server, Cold Fusion, Crystal Reports, among others,
  • "free" systems of the open source genre, such as Moodle.org (costs are different for "free" systems) NOTE: Please read blog on the real cost of Moodle at
  • the initial and ongoing cost of training people on three or four different software applications,
  • integrating, maintaining, and updating the software and servers, and other IT needs,
  • managing multiple vendor relationships,
  • having additional employees specialized in content management, instructional design, interactive designers, and authoring tools,
  • having subject matter experts.

Here's a recent example of costs from a small company that manufactures products and is a leader in its field. The company decided to move its internal and external customer training courses online, about 30 courses in all. The HR manager in charge had experience as a trainer but no background in designing, creating, and managing an online learning initiative. The manager received advice from various vendors and had decided the following were needed:

1. A learning management system (LMS): $50,000–$200,000. A cumbersome, home-grown database application was being used to track training, and the company saw the need to upgrade to a commercial LMS. The perception was fueled by 1) cost projections of bringing the home-grown application up to speed to learning standards conformance (SCORM) and open source standards, 2) the perceived need to import a purchased library of 200 courses, and 3) the need for certain features, such as reporting. The LMS packages being evaluated ranged from $50,000–$200,000.

2. A learning content management system (LCMS): $50,000–$150,000. The manager did an online search for "content management" and came up with three candidate packages. The prices for this trio ranged from $50,000 –$150,000.

3. An authoring tool: $1,500 per workstation. An authoring package that is aggressively marketed and widely used was priced at $1,500 per workstation, and two full-time employees were slated for the authoring positions. Additional costs included initial training, annual upgrades for the software, and sustainment training.

The low-end estimate reached approximately $175,000 for the project. The only "moving target" difficult to quantify is the LMS pricing model, which is rarely a fixed cost. Indeed, the cost often escalates as the number of learners on the system increases or on the whim of the LMS company. This can make the annual cost of having an LMS an open-ended budget item, unless it's tightly managed.

Sticker shock is not unusual. Initial costs from $100,000–$500,000 have caused many "small implementation" managers to say, "Hold on. All we want to do is offer a few courses online. Isn't there a cheaper way to do this?" "

The answer is YES WE CAN.

We have discussed the strengths of TOPYX® as it relates to bringing collaborative/informal learning with an integrated social networking to traditional LMS functionality. Please learn more by visiting www.interactyx.com, take a test drive, view some videos, read some collateral material.

But when I read the costs of putting in traditional LMSs, Moodle, etc. at multiples of the cost of TOPYX, and with less engaging features to enhance the learners' experience, I want to ensure that you know YES, there is a cheaper way and better way to do this.

We have a very compelling value proposition:

Social networking is exploding – is it part of your learning scheme?

In a recent survey by Nielsen NetView, Americans are spending 83% more time on social networking sites vs. last year at home and at work. It is becoming increasingly obvious that the use of social networking is becoming part of the fabric of everyday life. I can go and find the same type of stats on the growth in usage on smartphones.

So, if we can stipulate that social networking AND smartphones have changed how we do so many things in life, it is not too far of a leap of faith to build this huge phenomena into one’s learning scheme – at the corporate offices or academic institutions.

Interactyx is underwriting a series of Webinars to show you how an integrated social networking and mobile learning can improve the learning experience. Learners will be more engaged and willing to participate in an interactive learning platform that supports and promotes the fact that knowledge is socially instructed, and how we can extend that experience to smartphones.
I encourage you to sign up, participate and listen to our one of our Webinars; you can see our current schedule at: http://www.interactyx.com/interactyx-2.

If Content is King, Platform is Queen…

I am sure you heard the phrase "content is king". If that is true, then the platform is queen. What good is it to view the new Star Trek movie on a black and white television set. The content will never realize its full potential without the right platform.

Last week, we announced our partnership with SkillSoft plc where we would provide SkillSoft content on our TOPYX platform. We are very excited about this partnership. Why?

We provide our customers with a comprehensive solution to their eLearning needs. By teaming up the largest eLearning content provider in the world, we are able to provide customers a broad array of relevant content on a fully integrated learning platform. A true turnkey solution.

The old style of digitized content and boring legacy learning management systems are not relevant, as black and white television sets are not relevant. As technology has evolved to hi-def televisions, so must your eLearning platform.

TOPYX is the right platform for eLearning in today's world. It engages, interacts, and collaborates – both learner and instructor alike. Combine that with the content we can provide with SkillSoft, it is a winning combination.

And what would a king be without his queen…

Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX. For more information, blogs, forums, videos and even test driving

“What are you twelfth man on the deal team – last to know?” -- Gordon Gekko

“What are you twelfth man on the deal team – last to know?”
Gordon Gekko
1987

Ever feel sometimes that you don’t get the joke? I wonder if that sometimes happening with respect to eLearning. Cego Group, Europe’s largest learning and development company, recently completed a survey that showed employees wanted more eLearning (by 25%) and eLearning 2.0 (by 33%) (eLearning 2.0 is built around collaborative learning, using Web 2.0 tools such as blogging, forums, shoutboxes, etc). In addition, 75% of employees want more peer training and learning – social learning.

Which led me to thinking about some memorable quotes from one of my favorite movies - Wall Street…

Gordon Gekko asked Bud Fox http://www.entertonement.com/clips/27561/Wall-Street/Michael-Douglas/Gordon-Gecko/Twelfth-Man-on-the-Deal-Team “What are you twelfth man on the deal team – last to know.” Do you think the HR function is getting it? Is HR always the last to learn?

The good news is that we are talking to a lot of organizations that are getting it. That’s why they are exploring how eLearning 2.0 tools with social networking, integrated with traditional learning management functionality.

But some are not. Another great Gekko line comes to mind: http://www.entertonement.com/clips/72725/If-You-Are-Not-Inside-You-Are-Outside “If you’re not inside, then you’re outside, ok?” OK.

How can this be? Why is HR behind the curve? Is it generational?
As CEO, the question I would ask my head of HR – do you have a Facebook™ page? Over 200 million do... Which means many, if not most, of your employees or students do. If your HR head does not have a Facebook page, ask and ensure they are considering relevant collaborative eLearning tools that are on the market today.

In our marketing material, which you can review at http://www.interactyx.com/download-eLearning-topyx-brochures, we refer to research that shows that corporate learners, especially Generation X and Generation Y – are demanding eLearning tools that products, such as TOPYX™.

My last Gordon Gekko quote (promise - at least in this blog): http://www.entertonement.com/clips/27569/Wall-Street/Michael-Douglas/Gordon-Gecko/This-Is-Your-Wake-Up-Call “This is your wake up call pal. Go to work.” Listen to what the staff (and Gordon Gekko) is saying.

“…2009 may well prove to be the most significant year in the evolution of the book since Gutenberg hammered out his original Bible.”

“…2009 may well prove to be the most significant year in the evolution of the book since Gutenberg hammered out his original Bible.”
Wall Street Journal. April 20, 2009

On the cover of today’s Wall Street Journal’s The Journal Report, is a very interesting article by Steven Johnson called: “How the eBook will Change the Way We Read and Write.” The above quote is in his article. It essentially describes with the digitization of books, the entire game has changed on the purchase, sharing, communicating, writing, etc. of books. A very interesting read…

Use the replace all for eBooks and insert “eLearning 2.0”. 2009 will be the year that eLearning changes and eLearning 2.0 is embraced by corporations and institutions. Why? The promise was always there, the technology has not been. And like Amazon’s Kindle™ and Sony’s Reader™, eLearning 2.0 is available now. A recent survey - top 2 boxes equal 72% - by the eLearning Guild Research shows strong evidence that eLearning 2.0 initiatives are worth the effort in organizations.

If you read the article and consider all the powerful dynamics Steven Johnson describes that the electronic book will provide and consider an electronic learning platform for corporations and institutions, you have TOPYX™. Add to it the mobility of smartphones, you have TOPYX Mobile.

Learning objects enters the world of networked, digital content. Add existing content, create new content, collaborate with colleagues over difficult matters, debate immediately with folks learning the same content across the world, directly contact the instructor or author, repurpose content and resell small units or different units over various books (see our Edutainment business unit for more on ecommerce of TOPYX) through our ecommerce module.
TOPYX brings the engagement of Web 2.0 technologies into one elegant, intuitive learning platform that is affordable and easy to get into your operations and embraced by your learners. No need to wait any more.

Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX. SLX, no really, SLX

SLX, no really, SLX
http://slx.sun.com/
I found a recent case study highlighted by Bersin & Associates on how Sun Microsystems uses social software to build social learning was very interesting. It highlights the pent up demand for collaborative learning, as well we how it can be done quickly and affordably.
According to Bersin, Sun’s sales training group did not have sufficient budget or hours to meet all the training needs of sales professionals. The training group also wanted to make sure sales teams have selling tools at their fingertips with minimal clicks and support in the field, and by making it possible for subject matter experts to share valuable information with peers worldwide.

Sun wanted:
· open, informal learning environment
· a solution that would be:
- fast
- accessible
- easy to use
· functional on both desktops and mobile devices

Most of the Sun’s system was built in-house and the online content delivery network was outsourced. The entire solution was built for $60,000.

By implementing a social learning environment called Sun Learning eXchange (SLX), the training function found an effective way to "do more with less."

So what happened according to Bersin:
· One week after launch, there were 3,338 unique users (employees and contractors) from 51 countries; 19,508 content views; and 315 pieces of new content uploaded.
· Uploaded content doubled in two weeks, beating the goal by 10 weeks. Less than a month after launch, SLX has been accessed by more than 6,750 unique users in 82 countries, with 42,941 page views during 9,637 visits.
· Today, the system receives up to an average of 100 pieces of new content uploaded daily, making it one of the most frequently used learning programs across the company.

This is where eLearning is going. This is where TOPYX is – eLearning 2.0 is here. And you can have this today for less than $15,000 per annum – more than 75% less Sun’s cost and fully hosted. Check TOPYX’s test drive out and see for yourself.

Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX. For more information, blogs, forums, videos and even test driving TOPYX, please go to www.interactyx.com.

Social Networking Is Fast Migrating To Business World

Social Networking Is Fast Migrating To Business World

http://www.investors.com/editorial/IBDArticles.asp?artsec=17&issue=20090320
In IBD® this past week, an interesting how social networking is being used in the business space. As you know, we could not agree more. If 200 million users on Facebook® are doing this now, on their own time, why wouldn’t you expect that works its way into the corporate setting.

We think also think this applies to how folks will learn, engage and collaborate. That is why we built TOPYX™. But we also support the desire for any department, small and medium size business to take full advantage of this phenomenon. We priced it so you can afford it. We support it by working with you so you can get it operational very quickly. We host it so you don’t have to deal with any hardware or IT stress. We skin it as if it came right out of your graphic design group. And if you want to add smartphones to access it, we can help you there as well.

According to Forrester Research, social networking in businesses will go from US$258 million in 2008 to $1.0 billion in 2011 and $2.0 billion in 2013. We can get you there for under $20,000 per annum. Others may ask for + six figures.

Mobile learning is here

Mobile learning is here
I would love to blog about our about to be announced new TOPYX Mobile and how it is going to take mLearning to a new level – but maybe I am a bit biased so I will leave that to others. But mLearning is coming fast and furious.

As reported in , SAP is now offering corporate apps on the iPhone. Salesforce.com is offering Mobile Lite for CRM. Smartphones now represent 25% of all handset sales, double the sales mix from the previous year as 3G is readily available.

Learners want to learn when and where they want to learn. mLearning platforms and contents, with the robust smartphone, allows for this to happen. Then add social networking functionality, we have quite a compelling set of tools to for corporations, content owners or academic programs to truly engage their learner in ways only imagined.
Then you add location ready capabilities, you actually create a learning experience that is quite unique.

We are very proud to be on the eve of the launch TOPYX Mobile. We believe this will liberate the learner to enage in the eLearning whenever and wherever they want. And with TOPYX and an integrated social networking functionality, we think our total eLearning/mLearning 2.0 solution is worthy of celebrating.
Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX. For more information, blogs, forums, videos and even test driving TOPYX, please go to www.interactyx.com.

Can you afford to live in an eLearning 1.0 world?

Can you afford to live in an eLearning 1.0 world?

In arguably one of the most trying times to lead organizations of all types, leaders must still lead.

In this week's magazine's cover story Game Changing Ideas for Business, it discusses how leading companies such as Cisco, Accenture and Deloitte are using collaboration to stay competitive.

“Companies are tapping…innovative collaboration tools and social networks to speed up productivity and decision making.”
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/09_12/b4124030837359_page_2.htm

Enterprises of all sizes should be embracing collaboration at all levels now.

Is there a better way to get your organization to embrace collaboration is to train and educate them with learning tools with integrated social networking tools? Another 651,000 lose their jobs

Another 651,000 lose their jobs

The first Friday of every month brings a little more despair as we learn how many households are impacted by this recession. It is truly heartwrenching.

So as I drive in the office, I imagine how many CEOs, CFOs and department heads are thinking “I need to protect the enterprise.” Certainly, making the decision to layoff your fellow teammates is one of the toughest a leader makes in business.

Discretionary spending is often a target – and rightfully so. Corporate training often is usually an easy target. However, as we ask fewer of our teammates to do more in this environment, we need to ensure they have the requisite skills to be more productive than ever before. Also, as a leader, you want to reinforce with the team that you are fully invested in their development and success. Sending a message that you are cutting back on their development does not help this.
One way to both reduce costs, while providing the tools for more effective training is what we developed here at Interactyx. TOPYX™ provides for an affordable, collaborative eLearning experience. And, if you reduce just two instructor-led training events - where someone needs to fly somewhere, rent a car, a hotel room and eat up more carbon footprint, you can get TOPYX up and running – probably within two to three weeks with our implementation team. You can test drive TOPYX right now.
