Why does the UK lag the US in eLearning adoption and who will drive change?

Bersin & Associates recently published their UK Training and Development Factbook® 2010. Their research showed some very interesting comparisons to their findings in the US.

Findings that I found interesting:

· Historical slower adoption of learning management systems (LMS) vs. the US

o 39% of US organizations use LMSs

o 25% of UK organizations use LMSs

· Overall, US companies deliver twice as much training through corporate eLearning in 2009 vs. the UK

· Expected “movement” toward informal and social learning

o More companies are experiencing with social learning environments

o Corporate leaders, such as BT, internally developed social learning platform to allow employees to collaborate and sharing content in engaging ways to positive results

· Training spending in the UK declined only 4% in 2009, vs. the US’s 11%

As with many cultures, change is difficult. The Bersin study indicates that adopting online and social learning methods overcoming cultural barriers, both on the part of the learners and the training organization. As the current macroeconomic environment in the UK is as difficult as ever and the global economy as competitive as ever, I imagine CEOs/Managing Directors will be directing their training organizations to become more responsive to the new normal.

My question is – will the CEOs/Managing Directors drive this change, or will younger workers demand it in the UK?
